Unable to add accessory to Apple Home: what to try
The 'Unable to Add Accessory' error covers a dozen different faults, most of them network trouble or a device that is still paired somewhere else. Here is what to check, in order.

“Unable to Add Accessory” is one message covering a dozen different faults. Most of them are network trouble or a device that is still paired to something else. Work through these in roughly this order and you will clear the common ones fast.
Start here
This list fixes most cases on its own.
- Restart the accessory and your iPhone. If you have already tried adding it once, reset the accessory or put it back into pairing mode before the next attempt. A half-finished pairing will block a fresh one.
- Move the phone right next to the accessory. The first handshake often runs over Bluetooth and it is short-range.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and turn off any VPN on the phone.
- Check the Home app’s permissions. Settings, then Privacy and Security. Local Network and Bluetooth both need to be on for Home.
- Scan the QR code rather than typing the number. If you are typing it, watch for 0 and 8, 1 and 7, 5 and 6, B and 8.
Second-hand or previously used accessories
If Home says the accessory is “already added to a home” or “associated with another home”, it is still holding a pairing somewhere. A HomeKit accessory pairs to one home at a time.
Factory reset it, or remove it from the old home, account or manufacturer app first. The reset will not change the setup code, so you pair with the same number as before.
Network problems
Your phone and the accessory have to be on the same network during setup.
- Most Wi-Fi accessories are 2.4GHz only. If your router splits the bands into separate names, join the 2.4GHz one on your phone for the setup.
- Guest networks, client isolation and AP isolation all block pairing. So do some mesh systems with aggressive band steering. Turn isolation off temporarily, or use the main network.
- Matter commissioning needs internet access on both the phone and the hub, because it verifies the device’s certificate online. A captive portal or a blocking firewall will stop it at the last step.
If you have HomePods or Apple TVs
- Thread and Matter-over-Thread accessories need a Thread border router, such as a HomePod mini, a second-generation HomePod, or an Apple TV 4K with Ethernet, plus a working home hub.
- Check the hub shows as Connected in the Home app’s settings, and restart it if it does not.
Software versions
- Update iOS. Home pairing breaks in odd ways on old versions.
- Update the accessory’s firmware in the maker’s own app first. Some accessories ship with firmware too old for the current version of Home and will not add until they are updated.
- Be signed into iCloud with two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain turned on. Home data does not sync without it, and pairings will not stick.
Matter, specifically
- It needs a supported hub, an iCloud sign-in with two-factor authentication, and internet during setup.
- “Additional Setup Required” is not an error. The pairing worked. Finish the rest in the maker’s app.
- If it fails right at the end, add the device in the manufacturer’s app first, then share it to Apple Home using the code that app generates for you.
Last resorts
- Remove any greyed-out or “unresponsive” copy of the accessory left behind by a failed attempt, then try again from scratch.
- Restart the router.
- Remove yourself from the home and rejoin, or rebuild the home. You lose automations doing this, so leave it until everything else has failed.
